Landfill tax and regulation

For every tonne of material disposed of in landfill sites, from 1 April 2008 a tax of £32 is payable by us before incurring any tipping costs payable to the landfill operator. Government policy is that this level of tax will rise by £8 to £40 per tonne in April 2009, and by a further £8 to £48 per tonne in April 2010.

Stringent regulations, driven by the EU from Brussels, are constantly being introduced to landfill sites, which has resulted in prices, excluding the tax, rising also.

As a result of the above, our prices will have to rise by above the level of general cost inflation. We are however minimising the impact of these rises through investment in recycling techniques, and pro-actively investigating new working methods.

Landfill tax Exemption

For contaminated soil on construction sites it is possible to obtain an exemption from landfill tax when the soil is taken from the site to a suitable landfill site. The saving can clearly be substantial, but following the March 2008 budget this concession is only available for applications made prior to 30 November 2008.

An application to HMRC must be made, which involves the submission of the correct form, testing of the material, quantification of volume, and location of suitable licensed landfill sites for that material.

YPH has experience in this process, and can quote for disposal of contaminated waste as well as assisting in all aspects of the preparation of the exemption application.
